Middle School

Middle schoolers are transitioning from memorized facts learned in elementary school to understanding and applying those facts into pre-algebra, algebra and geometry curricula. It’s about developing number sense, translating the written word into mathematical equations, and closing any gaps experienced in earlier years. Tutoring one-on-one provides the opportunity to fill-in missing pieces while also staying on top of current material.

HIGH School

By the time students reach high school, they are well aware that grades and in-depth understanding of the material is important. At this point, math has a direct connection to science classes, technology and is critical to a well-rounded education. Tutoring for just an hour on a weekly basis allows for a deeper dive that enables us to uncover the areas that need practice and develop an approach to homework and tests that works in the current classroom environment. Overall, it leads to a boost confidence. In my experience confidence is key as once it is established the fear is gone.  I know all of this sounds very serious, but, I assure you, it can be quite fun!

Standardized testS

Nothing portends that someone is getting ready to apply to college more than the specter of taking a standardized test. Fundamentally, these tests are exit exams intended to quantify fundamental skills in English and mathematics and potentially predict academic and professional success in college and beyond. While not the only measure, these tests allow college admissions officers to quickly and objectively evaluate their applicant pool which makes them important. As a tutor, I focus solely on mathematics. In working together with a student, I evaluate the student’s approach, knowledge, strengths and weaknesses.  There is an art to test taking hence evaluating the approach to problems.  Then of course I work to bolster areas of weakness and hone their strengths.   Over the years, my students have benefited immensely by preparing for exams - both in their command of the subject and in their ability to take tests.
